Uniquely American
by Rich Carroll
Today's column is for those of us who grew up, unlike Michelle Obama,
proud of being American.
Some of us have stood at the gentle slopes overlooking Arlington National
Cemetery and smelled the freshly cut lawn of summer, felt the blustery
wind chill of autumn, and the quiet white of winter's blanket; each season
nourishing the stone soldiers. No other place on Earth will make you as
proud to be an American patriot. Listen carefully in quiet solitude and you
can hear the ping and clack of spent brass ammunition falling on metal and
wood. You can hear in the distance of your mind the sound of cannon and
rocket fire from Berlin to Mosul, Guadal Canal to Khe Sahn. You can hear
the faint sound from a Japanese battle trumpet, or the heel clicks of a
platoon of Nazi storm troopers.
Those who think about the world by marking the beginning of history with
their birth date are too shallow to “get” Arlington, and even less capable of
grasping patriotism.
The air is sweet in this holy place we call 'America's Cemetery'. Nothing is
more “uniquely American” than honoring those brave men and women
who gave the ultimate sacrifice to keep America and our allys free. Visitors
at Arlington are uniquely American in their understanding of our nation’s
history, and that our freedom was not born from appeasement or
negotiation, but from brutal force my men and women of free will and
independent spirit in a world where brutal forces exist. The stone soldiers
of Arlington did not have any racial axe to grind in their quest for freedom.
Italian, African, Indian; they were simply “American”. Foreign visitors to
Arlington will tell you, “Americans are the most patriotic people in the
world”.
Walk gently and quietly between a row of stone soldiers as they glisten
brightly white in the morning sun among the perfectly manicured lawn and
you will be shaken by the acres upon acres of brave souls who died not
only for their families freedom, but for those of other nations gripped by
tyrannies iron fist. Three hundred thousand stone soldiers, our uniquely
American monument defining that freedom is never free. From the first
stone soldier who fell in the Civil War, to the most recent stone soldiers of
Afghanistan and Iraq, Arlington will make you feel proud that you live
among people of heroism and sacrifice, people who would rather die than
surrender freedom; people who would never appease or pander to an
enemy wanting to conquer them, men who valued sovereignty and would
understand one flag kept them from the stench of multicultural diversity.
You will connect at Arlington. You will think long and hard about this
nation and our founding fathers as we are perched at a time in history
when we could place a man in the White House that is crucially challenged
by patriotism with no connections to those things “uniquely American”, but
rooted in African and Islamic theology; a man with a bitter racist axe to
grind at our expense. We are close to placing a Presidential candidate who
said after his participation in Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan’s
“Million Man March” in Washington, D.C. that “the march reinforced his
reasons for becoming a politician“.
We are close to placing a Presidential candidate in our White House that for
twenty years has been a disciple of the anti-American, anti-white tirades
from Jeremiah Wright. Would this candidate, Barak Hussein Obama, stand
at Arlington and feel as a significant portion of his party’s base feels that
America is more a source of shame than pride? Is this the reason he
refuses to wear a flag pin? What pride would swell in the chest a man so
disconnected with traditional America as he placed a wreath at the tomb of
the unknown soldier? How many voters will knowingly look-past his false
promises and biographical forgeries and part with their self-respect,
desperate for some form of salvation but satisfied by entertainment and a
record of zero accomplishment?
Memorial Day approaches at the end of May. Politicians from coast to coast
will deliver speech’s. Let us all hope and pray that Democrats who degrade
and dishonor America’s finest will spare us the hypocrisy of speaking on
this day. Let us hope that Presidential candidates who “abhor the military”
will stay away from our national cemeteries.
I plan on eating a hot dog and some apple pie, “uniquely American” foods,
but if your heart and soul are rooted in Kenya you may opt for nyama
choma. If your heart and soul are rooted in anti-American rhetoric, enjoy
your crow. If your heart and soul are rooted in the murderous cult of
Islam, may you enjoy your Camel dung. Liberal Democrats spare us your
“concern for soldiers” on this day. Spare us your picketing brigades of
ungrateful grievance mongers. Spare us your Code Pinkos, your Tony
McPeaks, your John Murtha’s, your Hillary Clinton’s and your Barak
Hussein Obama’s.
Memorial Day belongs to those of us uniquely American.
